Have you ever wondered why most power buttons are in a circular shape? Well, power represents connection and it takes a few actions to obtain it. All of it’s components are inter-connected, otherwise power wouldn’t exist. Without one aspect, it is impossible to get that rewarding and beneficial experience of power.

The year is now 2009. Almost 2010; and everyone wants to be successful. Now is the time, especially for young professionals, to get creative with their ‘hustle’. Jobs are not as readily available, and opportunities truly come to those who are versatile while exhausting all possibilities.

One magazine that holds my unwavering interest is Black Enterprise (BE). It consistently features articles, tips, and success stories about affluent African-American professionals. Additionally, the magazine constantly offers encouragement to all young professionals in very creative and innovative ways. After reading one of the latest issues, I came across an article featuring Five Ways to POWER.

BE breaks down the 5 Ways to Power in a manner in which all professionals can understand: Vision, Knowledge, Balance, Connect, Plan

Vision: Think big, and dream big. Know what you want, devise attainable steps, and go after it! Create a visionary board that highlights goals (including short-term, long-term, and lifetime) that you want to accomplish. Keep the idea of success fresh on your mind, and use it, especially when challenging times arise.

Knowledge: Never stop learning! Life is a big lesson, and the minute you stop learning, is the minute you stop living life. Take a chance to learn something new every day; whether it is in the classroom, from a friend or a colleague, or from self-purchased books. Attend your industries’ seminars and conferences. Also, surround yourself with individuals that “know MORE” than you; and never be afraid to ask for advice or help.

Balance: Create a healthy balance between your professional and personal life. Set aside time each week for YOU. Attend a yoga class, walk the dog, play a little basketball, or just relax. Furthermore, be careful not to neglect your family and friends. Establish a time for fellowship; maybe attend church or hang out a local coffee shop together. Balance is important; especially for health, family, and finances. These areas need special attention and should not be taken lightly.

Connect: Connect with like-minded people who share similar interest on both a personal and professional level. Attend trade events, community events, and/or religious events and connect! Join committees and volunteer. This helps to builds your network, while contributing to a greater cause.

Plan: Plan to be successful! Believe in yourself! Create your plan, and work on constantly implementing it! All great endings began with a great blueprint. Believe, achieve, and succeed.
