As young entrepreneurs, it is our duty to take hold of the phrase and revamp it. As a generation that is full of drive and ambitions, it is our goal to become “Jack of all trades and master of all.”
What is the point of being skilled at a lot of things, but great at none of them? In today’s society, the more you can do, the greater of an asset you are.
The “Jack” in the phrase characterizes the persona of a generalist, a person that understands the 80/20 principles. 80% is how well you can do the trade, and the 20% is how well you can communicate it. What you are able to do becomes the key to mastering your abilities and articulating it transforms into your presentation of your talent.
In the business world, the generalists are the people that run the company. Can the CEO of a software company really do a better job than the computer engineer working there? Every day application is far more effective than years of doing the job when it first started.
Being able to apply your skills on a day-to-day basis provides a better outlet for you to master your trade. Boredom should never be a part of your vocabulary, being that there is always something else to learn or master.
It should be your goal to hone your skills and shape them around your business. Being able to do multiple trades can enhance the quality of your company and it’s team members. It can be used as a sense of striving for excellence, within your working environment.
As a budding business person, there should be no limits to what you can do. Whatever the competition is doing, think of several ways to do the same thing, but ten times better.
