BET’s The Game Scores Big

If every Trending Topic on Twitter has something to do with you, then it’s pretty safe to say that you were among the, if not THE most talked about thing in Pop Culture.

BET’s The Game had this distinction last night! Garnering 7.7 million views and countless tweets, it was the most watched scripted program ever on the network!

The Game, a spin off of Girlfriends, both produced by Kelsey Grammer, originally debuted on The CW network in 2006. However, after three seasons, was cancelled in 2009. A firestorm of internet protests and campaigns ensued – all rallying to get the show to return. Answering the call of many disappointed fans, BET struck a deal with CBS (the owners of the game), to re-launch the popular show on their network. And on January 11, 2011, The Game returned.

And what a return it was! The very first episode was chock full of breathtaking moments. From Terrence J’s (of 106&Park) steamy love scene with Wendy Raquel Robinson’s character (Tasha Mack), to Hosea Chanchez’s (Malik Wright) blatant affair with his bosses wife, The Game did not disappoint. Of course, the plot twist that topped everybody’s list was the 180 revelation of Derwin’s baby not being his. But, by the end of the show we found out that it actually was his and that his now wife Melanie lied to him.

Yes, The Game is back and better than ever! One thing that I personally appreciate is how evolved the characters are. In keeping with real time, the show is set two years after we last saw them. Many things are different. The Pitts are now divorced and Kelly Pitts has a reality show. Pooch Hall’s Derwin Davis is now the star of the fictional Sabers. And as previously stated, he and Melanie are now married. Melanie has given up her dreams of being a doctor to now be a doting wife and step mom. My personal favorite character development was with secondary character Tee Tee! He seems to have matured and come out from under the shadow of Malik Wright. Wright himself has also changed. He now seems to be more dark and sinister, almost even bitter. After all, he was the star player, now “Rookie” Davis is.

I am pleasantly pleased with the direction that the first episode of this new season is taking the show. I love the writing, the styling and even the set designs. BET seems to have taken the fictionalized version of San Diego and up scaled it to the levels of a Miami, or Bel Air. The character’s houses are far grander and the environment more hip. I’m not a cinematography major, but even the way The Game is shot makes everything look more rich!

Kudos to BET for taking an already great show and bringing it to a level where I, for one, never imagined it could go. My only complaint would be that I wish subsequent episodes would be an hour as was the premiere! The hour went by so fast that I’m kind of skeptical about its planned half hour format. Guess we’ll just have to watch and see how it all plays out!
