Boxing State of Mind: The Pacquiao-Mayweather Saga Continues

So it’s set, the fight we’ve all been waiting for, November, 13, 2010 get ready to see fireworks as Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao will finally face-off against none other than… Antonio Margarito?  Yo did I miss something?

Yes, you heard right, the long awaited mega match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd “Money” Mayweather is off again after both parties failed to come to a bargaining agreement once more. Pacquiao has opted to fight former welterweight champ Antonio Margarito on November 13 instead. A fight that nobody is asking for.

The Pacquiao-Margarito fight is scheduled to take place at the 154 pound Super-welterweight class, but there’s a twist. The fight was not agreed upon by the Pacquiao camp until the 154-pound Margarito agreed to fight at a 150 pound catch weight. The 147 pound Pacquiao, who usually walks around 150-154 pounds anyway, would only go up in weight three pounds from his current weight class. If Margarito shows up to the fight over the 150 catch weight limit, he would be penalized $1 million for every pound that he is overweight.

Not the first time Pacquiao issues the same terms to the fight negotiations. The same happened to Miguel Cotto, when he was forced to drop to 142 pounds for a shot at a blockbuster fight against Pacquiao last November, the fight was supposedly a 147 pound welterweight championship bout. This strategy is becoming a regularity for Pacquiao and it seems to be paying off, for some people.

Though I believe Margarito can present a tough matchup for Pacquiao, Manny is too quick for Margarito and at 150 pounds, will prove to be stronger than a drained Margarito. Resembling the fight Margarito lost to Sugar Shane Mosley.

In the end, it all boils down to money. Boxing’s biggest attraction has been Manny Pacquiao, so he get the leeway, he gets to call his own shots, he gets to choose who he wants to fight and who he doesn’t and he’s being protected. Why not fight a young, up and coming true welterweight or super welterweight? Their out there waiting for a shot Pacquiao (Andre Berto, Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez).

See the Pacquiao I knew when he first came out on the scene at the 130 and 135 weight classes was a true definition of unstoppable, he was a BEAST, like a freight train that just came through and ran over everyone.  He didn’t have to start asking his opponents to drop in weight in order to fight him until he started going up to the 140, 147 and now the 154 weight classes, he became a marketing tool for boxing.

The luxury that Paquiao has is undeniable and the same can be said for Floyd Mayweather. What we have now is all build up to the big fight, Paquiao will keep fighting beat up former champs building his name and creating even more demand for the fight that everyone wants to see against Floyd.

Eventually, The demand for the fight and the payday for each fighter will be so overwhelming that both fighters will not say no. For now, neither fighter seems to want to cease any sort of advantage to the other, but it’s all marketing for that big money maker that boxing so desperately wants and so desperately needs. Not being able to make the fight this year  is another low blow to a disappointing 2010 for boxing.
