Building Your Online Portfolio

Technology has become increasingly important not only for businesses, but for freelancers and entrepreneurs as well.

If you specialize in a certain field, then showcasing your work in an online portfolio is a effective and inexpensive way to go. An online portfolio can be a collection of your professional work that is published online.

This collection may be viewed by anyone from employers to potential business connections. In contrast to a hard copy, an online version of a portfolio makes it so much easier to share with other people.  Many artists have already utilized the benefits of online portfolios and the number of professionals in other industries has taken advantage of online portfolios as well.

Creating an online portfolio has become increasingly convenient. Websites such as Portfoliopen.com and VisualCV.com allow individuals to build a portfolio with a few easy steps. Before you begin, it is important to strategize the overall goal of your portfolio.

What is the underlying message you hope to get across? Why are you creating a portfolio?

Once you answer these questions, you can begin building your online presence in the form of an portfolio.

Below are a few tips that will ensure that your portfolio gains notoriety.

Gather all of your materials and assemble in a logical order. A few common things that are included are a resume, a brief biography of yourself, contact information, clips, and pictures. What is your underlying theme? This can help you distinguish your portfolio from others. Be sure to use your creativity.

After all of your material is gathered, you can create your website. Websites such as Go Daddy and Freewebs will walk you through the steps to building your portfolio. It is recommended that you use a custom domain. This allows your website to be unique. These are not free. However, spending a few extra bucks a year will pay off. The return on investment will hopefully result in more business or a job for you. Go Daddy charges a small fee to maintain their services. However, Freewebs does not. Choose which is best for you.

While building your portfolio, keep in mind that the portfolio should be easily accessible and comprehensible. A user’s experience is vital for them to see your professionalism and hopefully contact you. Be cautious of fancy fonts and sizes.  It is also important to remember that people are viewing this from various computer types, so designing a portfolio that is consistent and readable by all computers is recommended. Make sure navigation is consistent as well; meaning that it is located in the same area on each page.

Keep it simple. A general rule of web writing is to keep text short and easy to read. The same goes for pictures and other content. When describing something, keep it clear and concise. This can also be accomplished by only posting the most notable clips of your work.

Review your portfolio before publishing. Such a simple but important task. Like hard copy, your online work should be free of errors. Publish it live for a few days so that you can see what it looks like. Also, share the link with friends so that they can proofread it and provide possible recommendations. If you are not the best writer, consider paying someone else to produce your web site copy for you.

Despite the industry you may be in, an online portfolio might be the avenue that leads you to the job you want or more clients. Do your research, because there are many platforms out there that can be beneficial.
