Standards, standards, standards! So many of us have them.
It is extremely important to know what characteristics you are looking for in a male or female companion in order for them to be considered dating material. Some of us have outlandish standards and preferences in regards to the relationship spectrum, but to each their own.
For instance, take TLC group member Chili on her new reality show, “What Chili Wants.” The show displays her laundry list of dos and don’ts that she is looking for in a possible love interest which tends to complicate her journey to romance. Although, one has to wonder, is there a such thing as too many standards?
If someone was to ask me “Demaris, what do you look for in a guy?” I’d probably go deep into the vault of my heart’s desires and pull out my ideal man: God-fearing, college educated, genuine, employed, ambitious, generous, humorous, and the list DEFINITELY goes on.
It’s a sense of excitement when you think about a man or a woman that you haven’t met yet, but you know they exists. Yes, I’m as single as a dollar bill, but I know that lowering my standards will only bring me down to a 50 cent piece and I’m good on change. Educated young men and women have to make wise decisions as to who they choose to share their time with. We’re educated for a reason!
After seeing Chili– a successful, beautiful, black woman– go on a quest for a man that met her standards and shared her desires, it let me know that there is nothing wrong with making sure a guy meets a few prerequisites before he can sign up for the class.
Demaris 101 is definitely not a bird course and I don’t hand out easy A’s. I’ve had to go through my fair share of disappointments in the dating world to learn that a woman should never lower her standards. It’s okay to make a few adjustments to the list, but always stick to it.
Everyone has a checklist, whether they want to admit it or not. Some are way longer than others and some are ridiculous, but we all have one. If you don’t have one then you are probably not living on planet Earth and if that’s the case, welcome to the real world!
So why waste time on someone that does not check off?
