The REAL K. Michelle

K.-Michelle-You-Should-Have-Killed-Me

Although K. Michelle sings that she “can’t do this” in her single “I Just Can’t Do This”, she really can do this and much more when it comes to her music.

On Monday night and I was headed to U Street Music Hall in Washington, D.C. for a listening party for K. Michelle and other artists. After about an hour, a local DJ introduces K. Michelle. Her Memphis accent is extremely present, as she begins to thank everyone for coming to support her. As she takes sips of the only man she trusts “Jack Daniels,” she proceeds to tell the audience her trials and tribulations of being a single mother, being abused and trying to make it as a successful singer while dealing with the music industry.

Originally from Memphis, K. Michelle offers what she refers to as “pain medicine music.” Her words and songs narrate her life. She focuses on giving her audience honest music that comes from within.

Music has always been in K. Michelle even at a young age, but playing the role of a musician wasn’t always her first choice. K. Michelle received scholarships to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University to pursue a degree in music, but during her matriculation she switched majors to pursue a field in nursing. Although she still sang, it was a trip overseas that really refocused her energy back on music.

During a trip aboard to Asia, K. Michelle toured with the Memphis Orchestra Sound Fuzion. From those months touring, when she arrived back in the US and took an office job, it was evident when K. Michelle could not be into anything other than her music. After taking the job, she knew immediately that life inside was not her calling and soon took to creating a MySpace page to gain exposure for her talents.

After a coincidental run-in with BET’s The Deal’s host MempHitz, K. Michelle got her chance to wow executives at Jive Records, where she is now signed. Currently putting the finishing touches on her album, K. Michelle does not believe in “fake music” and writes and co-produces every track that goes on her debut album “Pain Medicine.”

Aside from making music, K. Michelle is also a mother to her five year old son, Chase. Being a single mother is something that she is proud of because she is striving to make a better life for her and her son.

She wants everyone to perceive her music as honest and as good music. She advises on the rise artists to, “Know what you are getting into because I never did. When music becomes a business it is painful. Make sure you fight for what you believe in and never be naive.”

I was struck by her honesty and down to earth persona. Unlike others who claim to be so real, K. Michelle is the real deal.
