On the Rise: Kamila Mack

Kamila In Action

A few blocks away from the hustle and bustle of the infamous U Street in Washington, D.C., a group of young socialites have gathered to witness the calm and natural melodic tunes of Kamila Mack. Her harmonious rapping and singing mesmerizes audiences and takes them to a place of peacefulness and happiness.

Kamila, inspired by Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley and Erykah Badu, is a poet at heart that has transformed her words into km melodies and her melodies into heartfelt songs to connect with each person in the room. Born and raised in the District of Columbia, Kamila was surrounded by music and soon fell in love after being introduced to artists such as Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hyman, and Sade. “I remember waking up every morning to the sounds of these artists. Their  lyrics and beautiful melodies would stay with me throughout the day.”

Soul Spaceship is raw and uncut but it’s the truth. The music disengages you from the present time but uproots you to feel, move and listen wholeheartedly. Unlike Kamila’s counterparts, this is about love and inspiration in your soul.  According to Kamila, Soul Spaceship “Is a project in which I translated my vision for living life to its highest potential into songs that seek to encourage and inspire others to do the same. I write all of my material, so my music allows me to give my thoughts and perspective on life. I believe in living a positive life and helping others on the journey and I hope that message comes through my songs.”

When I first heard Kamila’s mix tape my thoughts immediately jumped to the incomparable ‘Lady Day’ Billie Holiday. I began listening to Strange Fruit and Nobody’s Business, two trademark songs of Lady Day, I heard the meaningfulness and the same passion. I know it is a tremkm2endous leap from a jazz singer to be compared to a modern day female lyricist, but Kamila has a rasp in her voice and that same edge as Billie Holiday.

Kamila spits truth and her sound is so raw and unique that your ears can’t help but to listen. Kamila says, “My music represents freedom. It also represents love, peace, truth, and passion.” Kamila is ‘On the Rise’ and takes her listeners along with her to higher heights of love, peace and sooouuulll.
