Fortune Magazine today released its list of Most Powerful Women (MPW) in the world. To the surprise of some, but not many… Oprah Winfrey’s rank fell from No.6 in 2010 to No. 16 this year.
Oprah’s rank could have fallen because she no longer has her daytime television show and her network isn’t doing so well. Falling ten spots on this highly coveted list seems to show that her influence could be fading. Some think Oprah should start making more appearances on her network to stay relevant. Despite this fall in rank on Fortune’s list, I’m sure Oprah has already began her strategy to take her network to the next level.
The MPW list is an annual ranking of women business leaders across industry. Fortune ranks corporate women in for-profit businesses only, and they base the rankings on four criteria: the size and importance of the business in the global economy, the health and direction of the business, the arc of her career and her social and cultural relevance.
When the list was first published in 1998, there were only two female CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies. Now there are fifteen.
