Taj Washington is a self-taught fashion photographer who currently resides in New York City. Photography has always been one of his loves and he has gone on to have his work in various magazines. He believes in the philosophy that one should “Always be happy; but never be satisfied.”
How would you describe your style of photography to someone who has never seen your work?
I would call it “Modern Editorial,” with a bit of a commercial feel.
What initially sparked your interest in photography and what keeps it going?
I was always interested in bringing People of Color to the forefront. Creating great images is what keeps me going.
How do you ensure that your work and brand stand out amongst the masses of photographers that continue to emerge everyday?
I read a lot of foreign magazines to see what is ahead of the curve, fashion-wise and photography-wise. Also, I believe that one should always change up their style to remain relevant and stay true to your vision.
From who or where do you draw inspiration from and how is it reflected in your work?
I draw inspiration from everyday things, such as people walking down the street, people on the bus, and just everyday life in New York City and Toronto, Canada.
What is one long term goal you have relative to your photography and how do you plan to attain it?
I want to be known by my first name. I want to be known as one of the photographers that made people stop and think about the images. At the the end of the day, it is more than just a pretty image to me. Photography is about telling a story through a lens. And of course, I want to make money from my talents, so it is all about creating and networking with the right individuals. And while I realize that I may not yet be where I want to be, I Thank God that I am not where I used to be…
What is one major business-related challenge you face being a photographer and how have you or will you combat this issue?
The problem I sometimes face is that people will love my work, but sometimes don’t want to pay me accordingly for it. What people need to understand is that in order to create outstanding images, I must invest in myself. And doing that is by purchasing equipment. And how do i purchase equipment? By clients PAYING of my services. Luckily, I have been able to maintain a clientele that doesn’t mind paying me for my work and appreciates the quality that i bring to the table.
Name one person that you would love to have an opportunity to shoot and why. Describe this dream shoot.
My dream shoot would be with Sessilee Lopez. i think she has such expressive eyes and has come such a long way in the game. I can’t share the details of how I would shoot her, because someone else will still the idea. LOL.
If you could do a dual purpose shoot that showcased your talent and brought awareness to a prevalent social issue, what would your shoot be called and what issue would you highlight? Why?
I would do something regarding body image issues. I believe that it is important issue to touch on because most of us go through it; I know I go through it, everyday.
A picture is worth a 1,000 words. Describe the below picture in one.
