While the 2010 VMA’s didn’t bring as much drama as the proceeding year, there were a few moments that had everyone talking.

In all honesty, my Twitter time line kept me more entertained than the actual show, so it was actually difficult to gather at least 5 major highlights, but the lowlights were rather easy.

The Highlights

B.o.B. And Hayley Williams - I really like B.o.B as an artist, but I was more interested in hearing Haley sing the chorus of “Airplanes.” After Keisha Cole performed this on the 2010 BET Awards, my love for this song came crashing down. Pun intended. While Haley didn’t go overboard with her vocals, she clearly showed that she is talented.

Justin Bieber – While I have never proclaimed to be a Justin Bieber fan, I must admit, he put on a great show. Performing on a stage outside of the Nokia Theater, he was joined on by a sleuth of background dancers that reminded me of an ABDC episode. Not only was his performance great, but I was glad he won the Best New Artist award.

 
Lady Gaga - Her wardrobe changes weren’t as dramatic as last year, but her outfits definitely make her stand out in any crowd. Her first outfit designed by Alexander McQueen, paid homage to one of the most talented and creative designers ever. She was also the big winner of the night, receiving eight awards including the coveted Video of The Year Award for “Bad Romance.”

Kanye West - Although he closed the VMAs, the real show began when the musical genius, Kanye, stepped on stage. All night I kept guessing what he would be performing, but like always, he never ceases to amaze his fans. Singing “Let’s give it up for the d-bags, Let’s give it up for the a**holes,” he ignited many opinions from viewers. Many people applauded his performance by changing Facebook and Blackberry Messenger statuses and sending tweets of his lyrics. Of course there are the people that miss the point and creativity and automatically deem his actions as ignorant. To those people, I say, stop judging and start toasting.

The Lowlights

Chelsea Handler – I think Chelsea is quite hilarious on her show, but she disappointed me on the VMA’s. I didn’t think anyone could be worse than the 2009 VMA host, Russell Brand, but they were neck and neck for the Cheesiest Punch Lines award. Most of her acts went terribly wrong, but I did have a moment of laughter when she got in the Jacuzzi with the cast of Jersey Shore and got out pregnant.

Eminem and Rihanna – What a depressing way to open the awards show. I guess they only allowed him to go first because he had to fly to NYC before the show was over. While I was pleasantly surprised to see Rihanna appear on stage during “Love the Way you Lie,” I’m not sure she helped his overall performance. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t the opening I was expecting.

Usher – Hmmm… Usher’s performance was mediocre. In the words of one of my Twitter followers, “The lighting effects on the stage were more exciting than his actual performance.” I think it’s obvious that Usher is getting “up there” in age, as he seemed rather out of breath during the entire performance. I give his dancing an A and his singing, or lack thereof, a STRONG C-.

Taylor Swift – Preluded with footage of Kanye interrupting her award acceptance in 2009, the mildly talented Taylor performed a song entitled “Innocent” for the first time. This pitchy and lifeless performance included the lines, “Who you are is not what you did. 32 is still growing up now … you’re still an innocent.” She also sang, ”Everyone of us has messed up, too.  I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new.” I hope she gets over it.
