Detroit-based artist, Vina Mills, is making a name for herself with hard hitting vocals and urban swag reminiscent of Mary j Blige (circa 1991). If you haven’t heard of her before, you should get familiar.
Vina’s song “Lace My Shoes,” which is about individuality and empowerment, is quickly becoming an anthem for her female listeners all over the country. “I’m headed straight to the top…/You can’t even lace my shoes,” she taunts. Her confidence and lyrical prowess is evident in this song. And there is no doubt that her fearless attitude is a result of performing for crowds when she was only six years old. We caught up with the dancer, singer and song writer who recently toured with Chrisette Michelle to learn a little more about her talent.
How would you describe your music?
I always call it electric-soul because it’s not just R&B, it’s not just POP, It’s a universal sound. The sound of my music to me is electric and soulful. It will make you dance but it will also make you feel.
How has life in Detroit influenced your music?
I love my city, it is truly beautiful. Great musicians, business, people are all from here, and the over all spirit of the city is strong. Life is what influences my music. The way that I grew up, my experiences within the industry and personal experiences all played apart. I write my own music so all of the lyrics come from life experiences.
Where did you get your start singing that led you to confidently embark on a career in music?
My start came from my dad he was a musician and a writer. He is the reason that I appreciate music, he also taught me to write from personal emotions . So I never joined a school choir honestly I thought it was kind of corny! I just sang around the house.
Tell me something few people know about you — something you rarely share about yourself.
I’m a Christian, and I listen to Elvis Presley a lot. The reason I don’t flaunt that I’m a Christian is because people tend to judge that I’m not a gospel artist, and the reason I don’t flaunt that I listen to Elvis is because close minded people think that I may be weird!
What are your plans for the near future? What can your fans expect?
My next project is shooting my video for my new single Love Again which is now on iTunes. Also my fans can stay tuned to my twitter @VinaMills for show dates and anything else new from me.
