We all can answer the question of what is our zodiac sign fairly easily, right?

Well, that may have been true yesterday. Today, however, Astronomer Parke Kunkle has thrown a monkey wrench into the equation. Kunkle says that due to changes in Earth’s alignment, the dates of many zodiac signs have changed. As if that weren’t enough already, there is now a brand new sign, Ophiuchus or Serpentrius, meaning snake holder.

As the Earth and Sun slowly move, the signs gradually change, says Kunkle. The 12 signs were originally designated when astronomy first began, some 3,000 years ago. And the constellation Ophiuchus, like the other twelve, was known, but disregarded by astronomers who thought that the Sun didn’t pass thru it. Now Kunkle and many other astronomers feel the Zodiac needs to be adjusted to properly reflect the Sun’s movement in the sky.

What exactly does this mean? Well if you, like many others, are highly into astrology, then it may mean a lot. As a Capricorn may now be an Aquarius. The new 13th sign, Ophiuchus, falls roughly within the first weeks of December – cutting into Scorpio’s time, shortening Scorpio to a mere few days. And unlike the other 12 signs which are based on stars, this one is based on a real person.

The 27th century BCE Ancient Egyptian, Imhotep, also known as Aesclepius by the Ancient Greeks, is the basis for the new sign Ophiuchus. Imhotep is the same man credited with bringing healing to mankind. His snake symbol is used by doctors worldwide.

Personally, I don’t care about this new found sign, as it does not affect my standing as a Leo! My August 21st birth date is still in the Leo constellation.
