Take a moment to imagine if the vocal talents of Avril Lavigne, Evanescence and Brooke Valentine all collided at once – what would it sound like? Well, wonder no longer. That cosmic collision has occurred in the form of New York based rocker, Sye Spence.
“It’s a mad mad world without you, but I’m gonna be a glad glad girl without you,” crones the singer as she laments over love gone wrong on her latest EP’s title track. She plays superwoman in this song – a victor of sorts ridding herself of an undeserving lover. After listening to her EP, Mad Mad World, it is hard not to surmise that her vocal abilities are superhuman as well.
A self proclaimed “knuckle-head from Queens,” Sye has been singing and writing her own music since the age of 6. A lover of various genres of music, she was drawn to the “pure emotion of rock music” as she grew up.
She writes her own songs (an activity she finds to be therapeutic) and draws inspiration from her favorite rockers Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, and Steven Tyler.
“[They are] just straight bad ass with no fear or limits. Bands like System of a Down, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182, No Doubt- they just speak to me,” she says.
Her music, which is definitely about being fearless and embracing one’s inner rebel, is reflective of these influences.
“I’m hoping [my music] will encourage others to do being fearless and that it’ll just cause a domino effect that will make the world a better place. I know it may sound ambitious but I always try to remember that I have to go deeper with my gift so it can inspire someone else to go against the grain, work harder, believe in themselves or simply let loose and have fun,” she says.
Spence is recording new music to be released early 2012. She is also launching a new vlog site at syespence.com that will feature some unique performance video and behind the scenes footage. On Saturday, August 13th, she’ll be performing for arts east NY (Check out www.Artseastny.org for more information.)
