To Take A Lunch Break… Or Not?

Lunch breaks are critical to mental health and work productivity, however, it seems that the percentage of workers taking lunch breaks has decreased dramatically according to a recent survey completed by LinkedIn and talent and career management expert, Right Management.

The survey shows, fewer than half of employees surveyed, said they take regular lunch breaks each day.

According to Douglas J. Matthews, President and Chief Operating Officer of Right Management, “Taking time away from one’s desk for lunch may go a long way toward relieving stress and boosting energy.”

If lunch breaks are taboo at your organization or if you feel the need to stay at your desk to get work done, there are a few things you can do to make sure you get the nutrition you need while in the office.

1. Bring healthy snacks readily available such as crackers or cookies, yogurt or fruits.

2. Create a buddy system. Have someone that will tear you away from your desk and encourage you to eat or at least be willing to bring something back for you.

3. Create a routine break. Make a habit of taking 30min out of your day to grab something away from your desk. Eating at your desk is very unhealthy as the typical desk, phones and other private surfaces are germ ridden and are prime habitats for the viruses that cause colds and the flu.

4. Keep menus handy. If you can’t run out for lunch then keep your favorite restaurants on hand to bring your favorite meal to you.

5. Bring a packed lunch. And be sure to eat it.
