Twitter Beef: Who Wants That?

razb

Anyone with an active Twitter account bore witness to the latest round of “Twitter Beef” on yesterday. The fire was ignited when Raz B took to the social media site to express his thoughts on the long forgotten, Chris Brown and Rihanna incident. Raz B, formerly of the R&B boy group, B2K, stated to Rihanna that he would not “Treat her like Chris Brown did.” As with any beef, Brown’s STANS (fans) retaliated at Raz B with no bars held.

What makes this particular twitter beef different is that Chris Brown himself actually led the charge against Raz B. Usually, celebrities do not engage in such activities. This time, Brown and Raz B had Twitter a blaze, slinging insults back and forth. The spectacle wasn’t only limited to them, but Omarion (also formerly of B2K) and Don Santos (of IMx fame) also joined in the foray. I, like many other Tweeters, sat and watched in disbelief that such fuckery was going down on such a public platform.

While Twitter Beef is not uncommon, an out and out argument, replete with @ signs and all, amongst celebrities is few and far between. Sure, you may have your occasional celebrity rant or an  undercover dissing (known as subliminal tweeting). This, however escalated when threats of physical violence came from both sides. Quickly taking over  Twitter’s Trending Topics, this was an all out WAR!

As the old song goes, “What is it good for?”

Who benefits from Twitter Beef? Sure maybe when it’s between the average people there’s the possibility of gaining followers, but among celebrities, what’s the point? Is it to boost publicity and/or album sales? Or perhaps, for the star who’s light is dimming, it’s a chance to stay in the spotlight. In this digital age and rough economic times, many celebrities may feel it prudent to take drastic measures just to stay relevant.

When does enough become enough? So far, unlike the East Coast/West Coast beef, no one has been killed or attacked because of Twitter Beef. With all the recent cases of bullying going around, are celebrities acting responsibly? Will someone actually have to get hurt for a celebrity to step up and speak out against this form of bullying.

You may say, “Its just Twitter” and people should be free to express their opinions however they want. And here in America, you’d be right. But, Freedom of Speech comes with a certain responsibility – doesn’t it? Surely you can’t yell FIRE in a crowded theater and cause panic simply because Freedom of Speech exists. And when your opinion turns into all out threats, where do you go from there if not to physical violence?

With cyber bullying becoming more and more of an issue, just how much credit should law enforcement give Twitter Beef? It all sounds silly now, but many of us that use Twitter have our GPS coordinates attached to our tweets. I hate to say it, but if someone truly wanted to, they can come find us fairly easily.

So am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? Is Twitter Beef just an outlet for disgruntled people to vent and for celebrities to entertain their fans? I’d love to believe that, but what do you think?

  1. I believe there are SOME artists who don’t know how blessed they are.
there are a lot of people who love to be negative and tear people down.
Some of these artists fall right in these traps of retaliation via @ responses on twitter! What you put out could be used against YOU. For example if Chris Brown would have responded to Raz B and said “God Bless You brotha….I wish you the best man” His stock would have skyrocketed! See the media is ALWAYS watching ….especially artists like him, who had major NEGATIVE publicity! TMZ would have STILL published an article. It would have said “Anger Management Classes seemed to have worked for Chris Brown” verses “Chris Brown apologizes for rant & says he’s not homophobic”
    See the difference y’all?
Moral of the story: Think before you tweet! Artists always talk about how people like Michael Jackson & Beyonce and legends before us in music inspire them…you think Patti would be cussing out Cyndi Lauper on twitter?
or Luther (RIP) would be cussing Freddie Jackson out?
nah ….take a cue from the legends that have inspired you!
Being humble & classy ALWAYS works!!!!!
