Tyler Perry is on the move again! This time with an all-star, all-woman cast for the re-adaptation of the Award winning stage play, “ For Colored Girls.”
The original script, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf,’” was written and directed by Ntozake Shange in 1975. It broadcasts the courage, perseverance, power and dignity of black women from different backgrounds .
The storyline is an eye opening, emotional rollercoaster into the dynamic world of black women and their everyday struggles. The plot is based on a series of 20 poems, collectively called a “Choreopoem.” The poems deal with love, rape, abortion, self esteem, and abandonment. It is performed by a cast of seven female characters, each of whom is known only by a color, for example “Lady in Yellow” or “Lady in Red.” Each color is significant to each woman’s story.
‘For Colored Girls’ is, poetry in motion.
Tyler Perry cultivates this already dramatic art, by giving it a modern twist and utilizing a star studded cast of powerful black actresses including Janet Jackson, Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Phylicia Rashad, Whoppi Goldberg Kimberly Elise, Anika Noni Rose and Macy Gray.
I am sure this movie will be extremely moving and life changing. I hope that it will open people’s eyes and open the door to having dialogue about the various mental, emotional and spiritual trials amongst African American females.
I encourage all of the ladies to grab a friend, a sister, a mother or a daughter and drag her to go see this movie!
‘For Colored Girls’ will be the first project for 34th Street Films, Perry’s new production company, which is housed at Lionsgate. The movie is slated to be released on November 5th.
