V-Day Has a New Meaning

Imagine being born into a place where self-decision was not an option.

This is a place where male domination is forced, both physically and emotionally. Women all over the world have been and continue to be born into these circumstances to no avail. They are being abused, raped, beaten, and forced to keep their mouths shut about it all.  That is until V-day was created. The V in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine, and Vagina.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls around the world. It’s a vehicle that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day has increased its awareness of violence prevention against women and girls in the following areas: rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.

vaginamonologuesEach year V-Day continues to increase awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2010, V-Day’s Spotlight campaign has highlighted the carnage being committed against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the Congo, rape is used as a weapon of war to torture and humiliate women and girls. This systematic sexual violence not only destroys women and young girls, but entire families and communities as well.

Various campaigns, colleges, universities and local organizations have partnered up to host annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues. Through these creative outlets, women are able to relive and express previous painful experiences on stage. Additionally, audience members are able to feel what those experiences were like through visual expression. These Monologues have continued to broaden the attention of the subject and increase funds for anti-violence groups around the world.

I recently had an opportunity to attend The Vagina Monologues. The experience was indeed breath-taking. Eighteen actresses graced the stage to perform monologues that were all unique in delivery.

Author, Activist, Performer and Playwright of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler, worked hard to successfully incorporate a variety of topics.  Titles range from ‘Hair’ to ‘Not-So-Happy Fact’ to ‘I was there in the Room’. Each was brought to life so that audience could innately feel what the experience must have been like at the time. The event was undoubtedly emotionally-charged for both the men and women who were in attendance.

I strongly encourage everyone to visit V-Day and search for The Vagina Monologues that may be taking place near you. It truly is a life-changing experience. Proceeds of The Vagina Monologues will be given to local community organizations that help to fight against domestic violence.
